Interactive Communication with Humpback Whales
Posted by Jim Crutchfield | , United States
Understanding whale communication is critical to their conservation and to our appreciating other intelligences on the planet: We are designing a real-time acoustic system for monitoring and interacting with humpback whales. The study cohort migrates between Southeast Alaska and Hawaii. Our fieldwork strongly indicates that a moored acoustic transducer array will best serve the scientific needs of interactive communication with this cohort. After several years of successful field work and developing new machine learning algorithms for acoustic identification and synthesis, we are looking for initial seed support to complete the design and test deployments.
